Method (1) Subjects : 100 Japanese kindergarten and nursery school teachers in Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, and 100 Taiwanese kindergarten and nursery school teachers in Tainan. (2) Material : A questionnaire with 31 items described techniques that may be used in reading picture books to young children. (3) Procedure : Subjects were asked to rate the importance of each item on a scale of one to five. Results (1) On the basis of the data from the questionnaire, a factor analysis isolated five categories of items which were considered important in picture book reading in both Japan and Taiwan : In Japan, the categories were : No. 1, Story-telling/readmg style ; No. 2, Concerns to children as listeners; No.3, Ways of holding the story book and showing it to the children ; No. 4, Reactions to children\u0027s comment and exclamations ; and No. 5, Questions and discussions. In Taiwan, the categories were : No. 1, Effective reading ; No. 2, Stimulating children\u0027s interest ; No. 3, Presentation of the picture book ; No. 4, Creation of pleasant environments for reading ; and No. 5, keeping children\u0027s attention. (2) The five items which were thought to be the most important by teachers were identified. Among them 3 items which were common in both Japan and Taiwan, were as follows : The selection and reading of picture books suited to the children\u0027s ages and development, Looking at the children from time to time while reading the picture book, and Reading with good, clear articulation. (3) The five items which were not considered to be vitally important by teachers were identified.
