| 内容記述 | What characterises Austen' s Mansfield Park most conspicuously is its use of irony, which effectively contributes to her criticism on the English landed gentry. For example, Austen intentionally avoids depicting the scenery of Mansfield Park itself, probably with the intention of reducing the dignity of Sir Thomas Bertram, the head of his family. Almost all the people except Edmund Bertram and Fanny Price fall victim to Austen's pungent satire on the English middle-class society. Anecdotes about the major characters' visit to Sotherton Court are designed for two purposes: the clarification of the major characters' personalities and the ironical revelation of the landed gentry' s moral depravity. The unfulfilled family play, Lovers' Vows, at Mansfield ironically triggers off ignominious love affairs of Maria and Julia Bertram with Henry Crawford and John Yates respectively. Fanny's return to her parental home in Portsmouth is originally intended by Sir Thomas to persuade her to accept Henry Crawford's offer of marriage, so that the Bertrams could enjoy a solid economic foundation. This attempt, however, ironically brings everlasting shame to the family name, and Sir Thomas experiences the disintegration of his family. Austen's heavy dependence on the use of irony is caused by her making Fanny Price vulnerable to Sir Thomas' patriarchal power and also by her criticising the degeneration of the English middle-class morals. | |||||||
