On the level of its textual presentation, this drama has a conservative outlook no matter how closely we look at it, or at least we must admit its weak-kneed nature in that Faliero’s attempt to bring about a revolution in Venetian politics is destined to result in failure. If we take into account its allusion to the post-Napoleonic political situation in Britain, however, the drama’s potential radicalism becomes apparent, as some contemporary reviews specify that the doge’s words can be as dangerous as Arthur Thistlewood and James Ings’s assertion rendered in blank verse. The ringleaders of the Cato Street Conspiracy, the reviews claim, have thesame kind of political dissatisfaction as Israel Bertuccio, the doge’s associate, bears in mind. The doge’s characterization, however, shows a considerable degree of fluctuation. His personality as a Byronic hero wavers between a radical champion of people’s rights and a conservative preserver of aristocratic\nvested interests. His execution at the Giant’s Staircase, therefore, allows a contradictory interpretation: he might have courageously died in battle, but at the same time he might have miserably committed suicide. The readers or the audience are entrusted with a task to decide which should be a convincing conclusion. As they think deeply over the issue, I wish to assert, they are induced to become acutely aware of the deplorable political situation which caused the dodge’s death. 内容記述 | This essay on George Gordon Byron’s Marino Faliero examines whether this poetical drama should be regarded as politically radical or conservative. On the level of its textual presentation, this drama has a conservative outlook no matter how closely we look at it, or at least we must admit its weak-kneed nature in that Faliero’s attempt to bring about a revolution in Venetian politics is destined to result in failure. If we take into account its allusion to the post-Napoleonic political situation in Britain, however, the drama’s potential radicalism becomes apparent, as some contemporary reviews specify that the doge’s words can be as dangerous as Arthur Thistlewood and James Ings’s assertion rendered in blank verse.
