The "tip-of-the-tongue" (TOT) state refers to the feeling that one has when the information he or she is trying to retrieve is inaccessible. We investigated the emotional details of TOT states and their resolution in real-life circumstances using the diary method. Two hundred fifty-seven participants were required to keep diaries for 4 weeks and answer standardized questions regarding their TOT states and their resolution as soon as they occurred. The participants felt negative during the TOT states and positive upon their resolution. Moreover, the emotional valences of the targets were positive when their associated TOT states were resolved, though they were neutrally valenced during the TOT states. These findings suggested that emotion could determine TOT states and their resolution. |
