| 内容記述 | Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey has been considered as a Gothic parody with a special connection with Mrs Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho. This essay calls into question this conventional view and explores the possibility that Northanger Abbey may have a metonymic structure as regards Catherine Morland' s psychological process of overcoming her obsession with Gothicism. Owing to Henry Tilney's therapeutic treatment at the abbey, the heroine realises that her fancy for Gothic elements has been denying her an accurate understanding of others. Lifting the veil of Gothicism allows her to have a clear view of the world, and this simile of veil-lifting can be applied to the whole process of her growth. On her journey to Blaize Castle, for example, Catherine willingly lifts this psychological veil as seen in her conclusion that morality takes precedence over personal pleasure. The heroine has been trying to break the spell of Gothicism until its completion at the abbey, and her disillusionment there makes her realise that an economic nexus is binding the people around her and she herself is trapped in it. The abbey scene represents the whole process of the heroine's psychological struggle to liberate herself from Gothicism and functions as a metonymy of the whole story. | |||||||
