| 内容記述 | This study examines the grammaticalization of relative constructions. Although the evolution of relative clauses has been subject to numerous investigations, few serious attempts have been made to clarify what pragmatic or psychological mechanisms underlie the process. I will argue that communicative strategies might play a crucial role in the evolution of relative clauses: The motivation for the grammaticalization of relative clauses flows naturally from communicative strategies which require the speaker to pay more attention to the listener or her needs in speech events. I will also focus on the internal structures of non-restrictive and restrictive antecedents. Following Davidse（2000）, we regard a non-restrictive antecedent as a full nominal while a restrictive antecedent is considered to be a nominal head minus determiners. This assumption backs up the hypothesis proposed by Fischer and van der Wurff（ 2006） concerning the development of wh-relative pronouns in English: Free relative clauses in apposition with a full nominal expression gave rise to the non-restrictive relative usage, rather than the restrictive one. | |||||||
