Nowadays the importance of sports for creative leisure and health has been increasing, and participation in sports has come to be regarded as a fundamental human right for well-being. In spite of this movement, there are still a lot of problems with participation in sports for the disabled. The purpose of this paper is to research the actual status of sports for the disabled and to identify problems affecting that status. The data was collected through the use of questionnaires distributed to the entries (n=791 ; men= 553, women=238) at the 31th National Sports Festival for the Disabled held on October 28-29, 1995 in Fukushima Prefecture. The results were summarized as follows : (1) The average training frequency 3.0 times a week and the mode of the training frequency was twice a week. The average training time was 2 hours 14 minutes. (2) As the place where the disabled usually practiced sports, both "public sports facilities" and "public sports facilities for the disabled" topped the list by 35.7 percent. "School sports facilities" (26.4%) came second. To go to "public sports facilities for the disabled", it generally tends to take more time than going to other places. (3) Among the persons with whom the disabled practiced sports, "members of sports clubs out of school" came first 31.5 percent of the samples. "Alone" (30.4%) came second : "coaches of the organizations for the disabled" (27.7%), third ; "comrades in school" (27.3%), fourth. (4) To the question that how often you practice sports with the persons who have no disabilities, those who answered "often" were 25.5 percent of the samples. "Sometimes" were 40.0 percent, and "seldom" were 34.5 percent. The percentage of those who answered "often" was larger among the entries for table tennis or archery than other entries. (5) As the best merit of sports, "meeting and making new friends", which is a social merit, came first in 33.6 percent of the sample ; "a pleasure of exercise" came second in 12.5 percent, and "improvement of physical strength and function" came third in 11.4%. (6) As the worst obstacle in practicing sports, "shortage of sports facilities" came first in 26.8 percent of the samples; "cost" (13.9%) was second; "no time to practice sports" (9.7%), third "no coach" (9.2%), was fourth. The percentage of those who showed "shortage of sports facilities" as the worst obstacle was larger among those whose disability is more serious than those whose disability is lighter. |
