| 内容記述 | George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss (1860) delineates Maggie Tulliver's psychological growth through various predicaments such as the confiscation of Dorlcote Mill, love affairs with Philip and Steven, and the expulsion from her home. She survives all these hardships, mainly sustained by her warm-hearted feelings nurtured through connections with her family and friends in her early days. Her elder brother, Tom, grows up to be a cold-hearted manager of the mill, and makes every effort to ensure that the honourable Tullivers regain their former prosperity. Depending on Wiener's framework of evangelicalism and utilitarianism for his discussion on Victorian culture, I have applied the sister and brother's ways of living to his expository structure. Tom disregards the feelings of people around him, works hard to clear off his debts and improves the social reputation of his family. Whereas, Maggie is sympathetic to people's sufferings, puts her energy into charitable activities and tries to consolidate her family's emotional unity. Tom's utilitarian attitude, I have asserted, is in a clear contrast to Maggie's evangelical devotedness to others. The novel's elements of Bildungsroman become conspicuous if we follow the process in which she learns how to extend her familial love to the society in general, after practising the suicidal self-mortification exemplified in the teachings of Thomas a Kempis. The final flood scene which unites the sister and brother in death allows an ambiguous reading that, though Maggie has been awakened to evangelical way of living, the two principles in Victorian society, which Wiener has proposed, are almost irreconcilable. | |||||||
