The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of voluntary exercise on myoglobin content and enzyme activities in murine skeletal muscle. Male ICR mice, 5 weeks old, were assigned to either a sedentary control or a wheel running group. Average running distance was increased progressively to 9km/day during the first 2 weeks and this maximal rate was sustained for 6 weeks. Body weight and epididymal fat pad weight in the exercise group were significantly lower than in the control group. Running capacity assessed by treadmill running in the exercise group was significantly higher than in the control group. Voluntary running induced a 2.8-fold increase in myoglobin content and 24% increase in citrate synthase activity in white vastus muscle. These results suggest that voluntary exercise increases the oxidative capacity in skeletal muscle and results in increase in endurance exercise capacity. |
