内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The purpose of this experiment was to examine the effects of concurrent instances and instruction trials on the interpretation of novel words in kindergarten children and college students from the viewpoint of subjects' cognition of acquired equivalence and distinctiveness of instances. The subjects were taught the novel word one and four times to one instance in each condition under the inclusion strategy and then tested whether the subjects interpreted the novel word as the subordinate, the basic, the intermediate, or the superordinate level of categories. For the living-thing set the instruction instances were dog1 for the control, dog1 and dog2 for the basic, dog1 and a cat for the intermediate, and dog1 and a dragonfly for the superordinate conditions. The novel word (torubi) was taught to only dog1 for all conditions. The test instances were dog1 for the subordinate, dog3 and dog4 for the basic, a horse and a deer for the intermediate, and a sparrow and a goldfish for the superordinate categories. For the food set the instruction instances were apple1, apple1 and apple2, apple1 and an orange, and apple1 and a rice ball for each condition, respectively. The novel word (buruna) was taught to only apple1 for all conditions. The test instances were apple1, apple3, apple4, a banana, a radish, and a cake. The instruction instances were presented with a puppet and the subjects were taught to dog1 (apple1), "This is a kind of torubi (buruna) in the puppet country." Then seven test instances were presented and the subjects were asked to select the instances which they thought fit to torubi (buruna). After the subjects were taught the novel word three more times, they were tested again. Based on the selection patterns in the tests, the subjects were classified into four levels of categories mentioned above. (a) For children the selection patterns between the control and the other three conditions did not differ significantly. (b) For adults the number of subordinate subjects was greatest in the basic condition. The number of basic subjects was greater for the control than for the basic conditions. (c) The number of subordinate subjects was greater for adults than for children, while the number of superordinate subjects was greater for children than for adults. (d) The number of subordinate subjects tended to increase and the number of basic subjects tended to decrease with increasing instruction trials for children and adults. The results were discussed in terms of cognition of acquired equivalence and distinctiveness and in relation to our previous findings.
