The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of four types of encoding-retrieval combinations on incidental cued recall. Both encoding and retrieval informations were manipulated by presenting the target with relational or item-specific associates and by presenting relational or item-specific associates as a cues. The experiment involved the rating of association between each target and its associate (relational or item-specific) as an orienting task in incidental paradigm. The subjects were given the orienting task and then the free recall and the cued recall tests. The associates of targets (relational or item-specific) were used as cues in the cued recall test. All the targets were divided into four categories in terms of encoding-retrieval combinations : the Relational and Relational information (RR) , the Relational and Item-specific information (RI) , the Item-specific and Relational information (IR) and Item-specific and Item-specific information (II). The cued recall performance of targets were highest in RR and II categories followed by IR categories, and lowest in RI category (RR=II > IR > RI). The highest performance of the categories in which the same type of information was used as a retieval cues (RR and II) indicated that the matching of the encoding and the retrieval contexts was critical in memory. This result supported the encoding-specificity principle (Tulving & Thomson, 1973). However, item-specific encoding followed by a relational cue led to a better cued recall than did relational encoding followed by an item-specific cue. This result supported the two process retrieval model presented by Hunt's studies (Hunt et al., 1986 etc.) that the generation process preceded the discrimination process. It was concluded that the encoding-specificity principle and the two process retrieval model were both neccessary for an adequate description of these results. |
