It is less well-known that in addition he composed a large number of songs and also chamber music. It has already been pointed out that Puccini transferred the melody of his song Sole e amore (Sun and love) to the aria Addio dolce svegliare alla mattina (Goodbye, sweet awakening I knew each morning ! ) in the quartet in Act III of La Bohème. However, there has been no detailed research on the manner of the transference, and in what ways melody and text were adapted. This article therefore proposes to analyse the melody and text of both song and quartet, to establish the relationship between the two works from the perspective of ntertextuality. The analysis reveals that while the song Sole e amore is quoted in the quartet of Act III, its melody is given only to Rodolfo and Mimi. Furthermore, the aria Addio dolce svegliare alla mattina liberally applies the keywords of the quoted song, “the sun” and “love”.
