内容記述 The purpose of the present research is to examine the effects of conferencing as a form of teacher feedback on revision in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) free writing in junior high school. Twenty Japanese third-year junior high school students in a supplemental English course participated in this research. The students first wrote free compositions about a topic given by the teacher: whether or not students need school uniforms. After that, the teacher and each of the students had a conference based on written feedback prepared by the teacher. During the conferences, the teacher asked questions about unclear points in the drafts; the students asked about problems in their writing and took notes. The teacher provided mainly content-oriented suggestions for each of the students. The students revised their compositions referring to the feedback obtained through these teacher-student conferences. Two native speakers of English evaluated the content and grammar of each composition. As a result, the students averaged higher scores on their rewrites, though we have yet to prove that the difference between the two drafts is statistically significant. It seems, however, that conferencing plays a role in improving the drafts.
