内容記述 This study is one of a series of studies attempting to clarify the developmental problems which autistic children often face and how we can appropriately offer educational and developmental supports for them. In this study we attempted to clarify the process of self-understanding of one's handicaps in a high-functioning autistic child from his childhood to adolescence. Our study is also concerned with what kind of support is helpful to autistic children in terms of education and development. The subject was a 18-year-old autistic boy with the high functioning in terms of his language and intellectual skills. We have supported this boy in our remedial education class for handicapped children since he was 2 years 9 months. This paper is organized as follows: First, the course of his development and problems from his infancy to adolescence are outlined. He still had the problems with social and communicative functions. Then, we point out that these social and communicative deficits are central symptoms in the case of high-functioning autism. It must be noted that he was aware of the fact that he is different from others and has difficulty in empathizing with others toward the end of preschool. Now, he is adapting to school and community life. Finally, we emphasize that it is important to understand the course of development and problems in each stage of life of children with high-functioning autism in order to support.
