| 内容記述 | Damage to coniferous plantation of the Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) with the Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) by Japanese giant flying squirrels, Petaurista leucogenys, were studied in June 1993 in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan. Collecting bark pieces on the surface of ground stripped by the animals for confirming the stripping season was continued at the end of each month till August 1994. The bark of upper part of trees was removed and the exposed sap- wood was gnawed. Damage rate (number of damaged trees/ total number of trees) on the cypress was 34.5% in the branches pruned area, and 15.8% in the un-pruned area, respectively. This shows that the giant flying squirrels caused heavy damage to the smaller part of food resources, but the bigger part for leaping. The damage rate on the cedar was totally 3.0%. These damages were considered to occur for a short period during May and June. | |||||||
