内容記述 Substantial Learning Environments" (SLE) refers to a general idea advocated by Erich. Ch. Wittmann, from his reflection of current mathematics education that children tend to learn mathematics passively by mechanistic and atomistic way. SLE is aimed at carrying out active and creative Mathematics Education. The meaning of it can also be caught as the situation in which man can find mathematical structures or patterns and develop them even to advanced mathematics. This study was conducted with an hope that when SLE is introduced into mechanistic and atomistic Mathematics Education of Japan, it would have impact on that by enabling children to do mathematics independently and actively. The purpose of this paper is to clarify how the materials based on SLE work effectively in order to foster Japanese pupils to do mathematics independently and actively. In doing so, we conducted a practical investigation by using the materials "number walls (Zahlenmauern)" based on SLE. We then analyzed from description of pupils and notices of class teachers how Japanese pupils work with the materials. The results of this investigation indicated the following things; ・ The materials "number walls" encourages children not only to solve the given problems, but also to do mathematics for themselves, such as finding pattern from the solved problem or searching other patterns. ・ Since the "number walls" is shown as holistic situation, it corresponds to the differences in ideas and levels of activities among children. ・ Children can do mathematics repeatedly on their own pace by using SLE in the long term.
