内容記述 The purpose of the present study was to examine whether the integration hypothesis explains the selfchoice effect on intentional memory. The integration hypothesis proposes that allowing participants to choose the target material facilitates clarification of the meaning of chosen and unselected words, and stimulates integration of the words into cognitive structures. Two experiments were conducted in intentional memory paradigm. The type of word pair was considered to be a critical factor for verifying the validity of the integration hypothesis, and was manipulated in terms of pleasantness. Three types of word pairs were used in both of two experiments; two pleasant words, a pleasant and unpleasant word and two unpleasant words. In the self-choice condition the target word pairs were given to the participants who then chose one of the two words that was more pleasant or more easy to learn, and remember the chosen words. In the forced choice condition the participants also were given word pairs, but one of the two words was checked to signify it as the to-be-remembered word. All the participants were asked to recall as many word pairs as possible. Additionally in Experiment 2, the participants then rated the difficulty of choice between each paired words. The results of the two experiments were consistent. Self-choice effects were observed only in the contrasting pairs of words, namely: pleasant and unpleasant. And the rating points of difficulty of choice was lower in pleasant and unpleasant pairs. This lower rating points was interpreted as index of easiness of integration into cognitive structure. These results indicate the validity of the integration hypothesis in intentional memory as well as incidental memory ( Toyota, Kobayashi, & Hirano, 2007). Namely, because a participant could choose the contrasting word (in terms of pleasantnes) in the word pairs, this facilitated clarification of the meaning of both words, and assisted their integration into the participant's cognitive structures.
