内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The purpose of this experiment was to analyze the category acquisition in lower, middle, and higher levels of conceptual hierarchy by assessing the classification performances, the uses of category names as a verbal measure, and the category differentiations as a perceptual measure. The subjects were 60 younger children with a mean age of 4:8 (4:3-4:11) and 60 older children with a mean age of 5:11 (5:7-6:2). They were required to classify the pictures under the "Go together" instruction and then to justify their classification performances. After that they were asked to judge the similarity of the two pictures in each pair by the "Similar" or the "Dissimilar" responses. (1) Although the finding that the category acquisition in the lower level was easier than those in the other levels was in line with the previous studies, the obtained age difference in the lower level did not support the Rosch et al. (1976) finding. (2) The younger and the older children did not show the same order of category acquisition, which suggested that the order of category acquisition did not match with the hierarchical levels provided by adults. (3) The age difference in the use of category names (e.g., "Apple", "Fruit", "Food") was the greatest at the middle level (e.g., "Fruit"). (4) The partial correlation coefficients between the classification and the verbal scores were all significant at the two age levels and the three categorical levels. (5) The discrepancy scores between the classification and the verbal scores (the former minus the latter) were similar in the two age groups at the three levels, but the classification scores were significantly greater for the older than for the younger children. (6) The differentiation scores were greater in the lower than in the middle and the higher levels, which suggested that the category members in the lower level are perceptually more similar than those in the other levels. (7) The partial correlation coefficients between the classification and the differentiation scores were not significant in the lower level of the two age groups and in the higher level of the older children. The coefficients were not so large even when those were significant.
