内容記述 The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of pictures presented when young children were read several sentences. The subjects were 40 4 year-old grade children and 40 5 year-old grade children. They were assigned to one of the following four groups : picture・4 year old, no picture ・4 year old, picture・5 year old ad no picture・5 year ord. Two types of sentences including the spatial relationships of besid-inside, on-under, in front of-behind and pictures drawn in color corresponding these sentences were used as material. During the aquisition phase, subjects of picture group were presented three sentences orally with pictures and subjects of no picture group were presented three sentences without pictures. During the recognition phase, both of the recognition test and the reconstruction test were administered. In the recognition test subjects were asked to judge whether six pictures were identical to those presented in aquisition and in the reconstruction test subjects were asked to reconstruct spatial loction of the objects in aquisition. The main findings of the investigation were as follows : (1) The group which were presented pictures got higher scores than the group which were not presented pictures. (2) 5 year old children got highter scores than 4 year old children only in the reconstruction test. (3) The biside-inside task was more difficult than the on-under task and the in front of-behind task. (4) Sentence type I was more easier than sentence type II for the subjects who have not presented pictures. (5) There were many responses that were errors in the recognition test and were correct in the reconstruction test. These results suggest that the pictures provide cues which can young children utilize the information visually and structurally and that younger children are not as proficient as older children in abstracting the spatial location of the objects from visual and verbal information.
