内容記述 The effects of within-category variability (wide vs. narrow) on the immediate and delayed recognitions of modal and average prototypical exemplars were examined using the schematic faces which had three dimensions varying five values in each. Six learning exemplars in the wide category consisted of the combinations of values 1 and 5 , the modal prototypical exemplars were 111 and 555, and the average prototypical exemplar was 333. In the narrow category six learning exemplars consisted of the combinations of values 2 and 4 , the modal prototypical exemlars were 222 and 444, and the average prototypical exmplar was 333. After the subjects were given the learning exemplars six times, they were required to rate the recognition confidences for the learning, the modal prototypical, and the average prototypical exemplars. After the subjects were given the interpolated tasks for 10 minutes, they were again required to rate the confidences. In the wide category the modal prototypical exemplars were recognized more frequently than the average ones on both the immediate and the delayed tests, and the prototypical exemplars were recognized on the delayed test more frequently than on the immediate test. In the narrow category the effects of recognition exemlars and delay on the confidence scores were not significant. The findings were discussed with reference to memory of the values and the combinations of values, and discriminability between the learning and the prorotypical exemplars.
