内容記述 Two experiments were performed to examine the factors affecting young children's categorization modes (holistic vs. analytic) in a classification learning task of schematic faces with five dimensions varying in two values. The subjects were 5- and 6- year old children. In both experiments the subjects were given SD (Similaity + Dimension) task or S (Similarity) task. In the task with SD rule, the subjects could classify the learning exemplars based on either overall similarity or a criterial dimension. In the task with S rule the subjects could classify the learning exemplars based only on overall similiarity. Experiment I: The purpose of this experiment was to assess the categorization modes in the tasks with two sample exemplars as a function of the classification rules (SD vs. S)and the amount of prototypical values (4443 vs. 4333). The subjects were required to classify the learning exemplars to reach a criterion of eight successive correct responses and then given two test exemplars to assess the categorization modes. The results showed that (a) the percentage of the subjects who could reach the learning criterion was greater in the SD than in the S tasks and also greater in the 4443 than in the 4333 tasks and (b) the analytic mode was used more frequently in the SD and the 4333 tasks while the holistic mode was used more frequently in the S and the 4443 tasks. Experiment II: The purpose of this experiment was to assess the categorization modes as a function of classification rules and the number of sample exemplars (1 vs. 2). The subjects were given the task with one sample exemplar or the task with two sample exemplars to reach a learning criterion of eight successive correct responses and then given the two test exemplars. The results showed that (a) the percentage of the subjects who could reach the learning criterion was greater in the SD and the two sample tasks than in the S and the one sample tasks, and (b) irrespective of the number of sample exemplars, the analytic mode was used more frequently in the SD task while the holistic mode was used more frequently in the S task.
