| 内容記述 | In The Ambassadors, Henry James develops his characteristic theme 'to live' from an elderly gentleman's point of view. Unlike young heroes and heroines of the author's other novels, Strether is too old to be a passionate seeker for his own life. Instead, he appreciates 'the virtuous attachment' between Chad and Madame de Vionnet, and fights for the fulfilment of their relationship, thinking that they are his youth. Strether's idealistic vision of life is partly illusive. He overestimates Chad's fine development and Madame de Vionnet's contribution to it. To Strether, Madame de Vionnet seems to be a rare woman of legend who exists only in his dreams. In reality, she is a superb kind offemme du monde that the European culture has produced. She drives 'a golden nail' into his mind, and deprives him of his independence of mind. He stands by her against his duty as 'the ambassador' of Mrs. Newsome, risking his future security, that is, his marriage with his prosperous mistress. Strether has fully responded to the romantic vision of life which Europe has revealed him. But his idealism collapses when he finds out that Chad and Madame de Vionnet are having sexual relations. His New England conscience cannot cope with the raw reality of life; Madame de Vionnet's strange passion for Chad is the cause of wonder and disappointment to Strether. At the end of the novel he returns to America after making his marriage with Mrs. Newsome impossible. What does his three months experience in Europe, especially his meeting with Madame de Vionnet mean to his life? To him, she is 'the illusion of freedom,' which he said in the scene of Gloriani's garden, one can have in one's mould of life. Strether's mould of life is to live as a clever and consciencious New Englander; he cannot have another kind of life. But he does have the illusion of freedom, by which he appreciates and lives for 'the most charming woman in the world.' Madame de Vionnet is also the 'great enchantress' whom he has never known in his life in America. She charms and allures him out of his loyalty to Mrs. Newsome and destroys his future security. But he does enjoy a few happy moments, neglecting his duty and living for his personal, his spiritual and sensuous pleasure, without which, the author indicates in his many novels, one cannot fully live. Moreover, he has got rid of Mrs. Newsome's dominating influence with the fuller vision of life which he has gained through his European experience. His future life will be in solitude and with slender means, but he may live up to his mould of life with the memory of the great enchantress and the illusion of freedom. | |||||||
