| 内容記述 | The religious ritual, Shunie, at the Nigatsudo Hall of the Todaiji Templ was inaugurated by Jitchu in the fourth year of Tempyo Shoho (752 A.D.), this year falling on the 1234th annual. A legend says that Jitchu, who rendered brilliant achievements, assisting Roben, the first betto or archbishop of the Tbdaiji Temple, in the administration of its religious affairs, suddenly vanished from sight under the shumidan (the altar for Buddha) in the course of the Shoya Gongyo, a religious service in the early-evening period, on the fifth of February in the fourth year of Daido (809 A.D.). In accordance with the legend, 'Kokyo Rongi Hoyo'(a memorial service by lecturing and arguing the Buddhist Scriptures) has been held in the early-evening period of March 5, which is called 'Jitchuki' meaning the service in memory of Jitchu. For the service, the Shushi, a priest ranking third in holy orders, acts as Dokushi, a priest who is to proclaim the sutras chosen for questioning, the officiating priest, Daidoshi, acts as Koji, a lecturer, lectures on the two main sutras, Kegonkyd and Hokekyo, and then a priest ranking low in holy orders, called Chudo, performs in the role of Monja, a questioner. This form of memorial service takes place, besides the regular service held on the fifth, on such occasions as Naijin Nehanko, a seryvice in memory of the death of Buddha celebrated at the inner temple, on the fifteenth, and Jiyaku, a monthly service, at the Nigatsudo Hall on the eighteenth. The tone of the chanting has a monotonous but particular rhythm. The servicechants, Shomyo, on this occasion are of Nyoraibai, Sange, Taiyo, Kanjo, Rokushueko, Ekomon, and so forth, most of which are chanted at the monthly service, as well as at the anniversary ritual, Shunie, but the chants seem to sound rather peculiar on the occasion of the particular ritual. | |||||||
