| 内容記述 | The ancient great mound of Mt. Mesuri, supposedly built in the fourth century as a burial place of a mighty nobleman of Yamato Court of old Japan, has presented a number of romantic mysteries to modern people. Particuarly, the huge "Tokushu Ento Haniwa" (Special Kind of Cylindrical Haniwa), which were unearthed from the mound, have such splendid and magnificent features that we could safely say that they are not only among the greatest haniwa in Japan, but also among the biggest earthen wares in the history of mankind. While not a few reports and papers have been written about these haniwa, scarce light has been shed so far on such practical matters as the method of handling the clay and that of producing, calcinating, and transporting such big heavy haniwa. From the viewpoint of experimental archaeology, we attempted to restore the same type of haniwa by ourselves by trying to follow the techniques and emotions of the ancient craftsmen in olden times. Starting with exploring the areas around the great old mound of Mt.Mesuri for the clay, we made a lot of experiments, observations and analyses from every possible angle and in the end we could successfully detect the identical clay with that which had been used in the huge haniwa of olden Japan. Furthermore, we created, with this clay, two pieces of "Tokushu Ento Haniwa" and two more pieces of "Takatsuki-gata Tokushu Ento Haniwa" (Special Kind of Cylindrical Haniwa in a Form of One-Legged Table) spending seven months and then we completed our production after successful calcination. The aim of this paper is to discuss the processes and techniques of our production of the haniwa and to cast a light on the highly refined ceramic culture of our ancestors at the period of ancient burial mounds. | |||||||
