| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to call attention to the most typical article mistakes from a large sample of sentences written by Japanese composition and conversation students. 36 mistaken sentences have been grouped by type of error, especially : 1) Nouns that were specific due to the effects of a limiting prepositional phrase following the noun or because the noun-plus-adjective was superlative in nature, 2) Nouns that remained unspecific in spite of being modified by non-limiting phrases or adjectives, 3) Nouns denoting uncountable mass, especially those in which the kind of mass was emphasized. The paper includes a brief set of rules which have been organized in a simplified format to help students grasp the three basic concepts above (of specific, unspecific, and kind). A simple letter code to the basic rules follows each of the model sentences. In addition, a set of brief footnotes follows the sentences ; the most difficult problems are delt with in some detail. The conclusion gives several suggestions to teachers for approaching the wide scope of article use and dividing it into manageable parts. | |||||||
