| 内容記述 | The main subject of this thesis is Henry James' early tales (27 in number) which were printed in American magazines before the publication of Roderick Hudson (James' first "international novel") in 1875 in book form. Before entering into this main subject, I roughly discuss James' early activity as a critic. In his early years he seemed more successful as a critic rather than as a novelist; when he was twenty-two years old, he was a regular contributor to Nation among leading scholars and literary men. I pick up his articles (mostly bookreviews) on Julian Hawthorne, George Eliot, Hardy, Whitman, and Flaubert, and show his "subjective" attitude as a critic. His reviews are full of youthful self-confidence; he freely deals with his objects from his personal standard of refined literary taste, and from his Anglo-Saxon moral standard. This kind of subjective bookreviews of young Henry James seemed to be welcomed by the American magazines. As for his tales (my main subject) published from 1864 to 1875, I divide them into three groups according to the years of publication, discuss the characteristic of each group, and show how one group developed into the next group, referring to the author's biographical events. The first group is those which were published during 1860s (14 tales). They are experimental, full of variety in subjects and styles. But as a whole, it is a period when Henry James was trying to write realistic stories taking the material from the American daily life. These "realistic stories" are generally gloomy and restrained. Of course, they are influened by the darkening shadow of the Civil War, in which Heny James did not serve. Moreover, I think, James' personal skeptical view of life, especially his skeptical view of love between a man and a woman makes these stories gloomy and oppressive. The second group is those which were written after his grand tour in Europe about a year from 1869 to 1870 (five tales). Among this group, I mainly tell about "Travelling Companions" and "A Passionate Pilgrim" The former is very bright, full of happy feeling and is happy ending; the latter, though less bright and unhappy ending, is full of passionate feeling. These tales are James' memorial to his European tour. But they are also his memorial to Minny Temple, his much loved cousin who died at twenty-four while he was travelling. Minny Temple became the archetype of Jamesian heroines in his later works. The third group is those written after James' next European tour (8 tales). In these tales James' "international theme" becomes more complex and matured. The improtant themes treated at this period are "dilemna of an American artist in Europe", "American innocence versus European culture" and "observer of the life" etc. James' treatment of these themes is delicate and moralistic, and these are the themes which he is to pursue throughout his literary career as a great novelist. | |||||||
