| 内容記述 | I Introduction II Shaftesbury's criticism of Hobbes III Butler's criticism of Hobbes IV Significances and points in issue in the thought of Shaftesbury and Butler Ⅴ Conclusion The first half of this "The Problem of Human Nature" (which was published in the preceding number) handled Hobbes's pessimistic view about human nature, and the criticism of it by Shaftesbury and Butler. Therefore, this paper will mainly examine the points which Shaftesbury and Butler asserted in the support ot the goodness of human nature. (1) The first of these points concerns the affections which influence and govern the human being. According to Shaftesbury, these affections are divided into the natural affections which lead to the good of the public, the self-affections which lead only to the good of the private, and the unnatural affections which don't tend either to any good of the public or private. My examination will show that what Shaftesbury and Butler held on these affections is inconsistent with their assertion of the human nature being essentially good. (2) The second of these points concerns their assertion that virtue ultimately leads to happiness. For example, Shaftesbury asserted that to be virtuous was to have the chief means and power of self-enjoyments. I will insist that their assertion is too optimistic about the actual state where man is placed. In conclusion I will insist that, as far as every human being has undue self-love, he is necessarily apt to vices and crimes, and in order to establish more peaceful society, he ought to be more careful of his own inner attitudes. | |||||||
