| 内容記述 | In this paper, I intend to investigate the school effects, especially the effects of higher education on the modernization of social systems through an international comparison. Data were obtained from the publications which provided estimates of the characteristics of 38 countries. Based on multiple regression analysis, I examined these data to see how educational variables predict social indicators selected as dependent variables. These dependent variables indicate the degree of modernization. The 14 social indicators are selected out of four general sectors : economic factors ( 5 indicators), mass media (4), health and nourishment capabilities (3) , and population characteristics(2). The educational variables used to predict these dependent variables consist of : 1) primary enrollment/age group population, 2) secondary percentage of girls in the secondary schools, 5) percentage of students who major in humanities, 6) percentage of students who major in social sciences, and 7) percentage of studehts who major in natural sciences.According to the results of this investigation, many aspects of a country's modernization are closely interrelated (see Table 2). These variables of modernization are closely related with primary and secondary education rather than higher education (see Table 4). These findings give important suggestions both for evaluating the present situation and functions of higher educational institutions and for formulating future educational policies. | |||||||
