Electrochemical and spectrochemical behaviors of Ru(II) complexes with αα´-bipyridine and o-phenanthroline in nonaqueous solvents are studied. Electrode potentials of successive one electron processes of the complexes are compared with UV spectra and the relation between the electrode reaction and the electronic configurations of the complexes are discussed. Electrode reaction of these complexes in AN are found to proceed in one electron processes as shown below. RuL2X2(3-n)+ ← -e ― RuL2X2(2-n)+ ― e → RuL2X2(1-n)+ ― e → RuL2X2-n Where L is bip or phen, X2 is bip, phen, (py)2, (NH3)2, en, (CN2), n=0 for bip, phen, en, (py)2, (NH3)2 and n=2 for (CN)2. Absorption spectra due to t2g→π* charge transfer process are observed in visible region. A good linear relation between CT band energy and (Eox-Ered,1) is obtained for these complexes. It is confirmed that one electron is removed from a t2g orbital of the complexes in the oxidation process and electrons enter into π* orbitals of the complex in reduction process. |
