| 内容記述 | This paper intends to make clear the patterns of decision-making process in Japanese higher educational institutions. The four nonmetric independent variables (factors) used here are the age and status of respondents, and the founder and size of institution, The 13 dependent variables include the composition and conduct of faculty meetings, members'interest in and satisfaction with governmental administration of higher education, and so on. The following is a summary of the findings in this study. 1. Results of the analysis show that the status rank of faculty members tends to have strong net effects on most of the dependent variables, especially on those related to the composition and management of faculty meetings. In addition to this factor both the type of control and size of institution have influence on the variables related to the central level of governance, although these two factors have complicated interactions. 2. As to the extent to which faculty members feel that junior members' opinions are reflected in faculty meetings, faculty members at small national and large public institutions are most likely to say that their opinions have much impact. It should be noted that there is little variation among faculty members by institutional size in the private sector. 3. While in the private sector the smaller the institution the greater is the likelihood for members to express concern with the nature of central campus government, there is relatively little variation by size in the national university sector, and in the public university sector concern is highest in large and small universities. On the other hand, in the public and private sectors, the smaller the universities the lower tends to be the level of satisfaction with the central level of governance. 4. As to the hypothesis that the self-interests of decentralized organizational units such as faculties and departments make it difficult for their university to make harmonious university-wide decisions, the faculty members at national universities are most likely to agree while those at private universities are least likely. In the private sector, the smaller the university the greater tends to be the disagreement, but in the national universities, the agreement is most common in the medium-sized and large universities. 5. Concerning conflicts between faculty and university founders, in both the public and private universities, the smaller the institutions, the greater the incidence of conflicts. But in the national university sector, faculty members in the larger universities are most likely to report frequent conflicts with founders. Based on the results of this multivariate analysis, we gain a clearer sense of the location of some of the problems of campus governance. Besides these factors, however, such factors as size of faculties and departments, form of decision-making and members' participation in these units, quality of information delivered to academic staff, and style of leadership by the deans or department chairmen might also be considered. | |||||||
