| 内容記述 | My main purposes of this article are to reexamine certain relevant achievements by an Anglo-American sociologist, R.M.MacIver, and to capture explicitly the aspects of development or modification in his conceptual framework of theoretical sociology. My strategy of argumentation is twofold. First, I scrutinize a series of his work listed as follows: Community: A Sociological Study (1917, his first work), The Elements of Social Science (1921), Society: Its Structure and Changes (1931), Society: A Textbook of Sociology (1937), Social Causation (1942), and finally Society:An Introductory Analysis (1949, with C.H.Page). Secondly, I try to focus on the trace of modification crucial to his theoretical framework and make clear some important steps with respect to which a major shift in his general attitude toward sociological science has become prominent. I discuss, among others, that his epistemology concerning sociology as a science of society, in which his earlier orientation of "synthetic sociology" can be seen under the impact of German formal sociology since 1930 has changed gradually to "sociology as a special science" with its goal to social relationships; the method of sociology, in which, however, his original attitude against any inclination to the methodology as a natural science proves to be consistently maintained; the way of analyzing social structure with the central concept of "community", in which his earlier concept of "community" with the implications of both "total society" and "territorial society" can be pointed out as substantially restricted only to the scope of "territorial society" and instead a new concept of "society" was introduced for "total society"; and lastly the model for social change. | |||||||
