| 内容記述 | In Shinkyo-soen, the residential institution for the mentally handicapped adults, satisfactory results were obtained in a short period on improving the social adjustment of the mentally handicapped. It leads to the suggestion that inadequate social adjustment of the mentally handicapped must be grasped in relation to their social circumstances rather than held only as the results of constitutional defects fixedly. As regards the general tendency in this respect, the author reported general overviews in 1973 and 1974. In this paper, the author demonstrated four cases in order to exemplifyhow they were treated and how they overcame their own problems in this institution. The four cases are a 41-year-old male who had been diagnosed as a congenital mute and began to speak in this institution, a 17-year-old bold boy whose marked emotional instability was resolved gradually, a 23-year-old male who was released from his affect-starvation situation, and lastly a 23-year-old male who had been a fetish and have been treated with in this institution. This four cases are not exceptional ones even if they changed "dramatically" from the practical viewpoint of treating the mentally handicapped. Most of the residents have showed more or less positive changes in this situation. The favorable physical conditions, free and impartial life rules, regular life rhythm of labor and recreation, familylike affectionate instruction and so on must be considered as significant in these remarkable changes. Indeed, Shinkyo-soen is to be regarded as a "utopia" for the mentally handicapped considering the present situation in Japan. But it may lead to incorrect direction of the welfare of the handicapped in Japan if we overlook the practice of this institution as a special Utopian try. The author concluded that the practice of this institution aiming at "human restoration" of the handicapped gives future direction to the welfare of the handicapped. | |||||||
