| 内容記述 | Enrichment of one component of the grammar leads to simplification in other parts. Transformations with greater complexity and their empirical validity have been one of the most controversial arguments in recent linguistic literature. Bresnan's Ordering Hypothesis - the Nuclear Stress Rule(NSR)of English is ordered within transformational cycles after all the syntactic transformations and the stress patterns of certain syntactically complex constructions reflect those of the simple sentences embedded within them in deep stucture - has interesting implications for linguistic theory. The ordering of the phonological rule within derived constituent structures, if it is correct, will provide a most persuasive and explanatory insight upon which we could filter out doubtful deep structures and transformation-like operations. In this paper I try to speculate on the way that model comes about and foresee a possible orientation of the linguistic research by examining the role of intonation in syntactic discussions. | |||||||
