| 内容記述 | Numerous explanations have traditionally been put forth for the intricacies of negation in English. To incorporate any such amount of concepts of all these phenomena in a single adequate theory, is, of course, far beyond the present writer's capacity. This paper, however, attempts to make as clear as possible what are the crucial issues of negation in the transformational grammar, discussing the three criteria of definiton as instances of "sentence negation" with the possibility of locating NEG in pre-S position, similarity in essence between the position of semantic interpretation (the interpretive theory) and that of transformational derivation of negatives from deeper structures with respect to S-nodes which seem to be relevant in comparing the two competing formulations, NEG-transportation which moves NEG in an embedded S to the matrix when the matrix verb is marked for the rule, and the validity of considering quantifiers as predicates of higher sentences. The new models such as +N SHARING, ±DEF INTRODUCTION, +NEG ATTACHMENT are reviewed, though quite cursorily because of the limited space. During this discussion it has become clear that the negative element NEG cannot be stated in full generality unless the mechanism and formal characterization of feature NEG becoming 'crystallized' into constituent NEG is provided in nonad- hoc way, together with the syntactic and semantic status of the S-node. This paper is a small step toward the establishment of the model of "feature-bundle" as a linguistic theory. | |||||||
