| 内容記述 | The Present paper attempts to investigate the relation of the changes observed in the abilities of social life to the life situation among the mentally handicapped adults. The subjects are 48 mentally handicapped adults (28 males and 20 females), who have been enrolled in this institution at some time from 1967 to 1970. Their mean IQ is 42 and mean age 26 years. The subjects consist of 6 severs, 29 moderate and 13 mild retardates, and 17 of 48 subjects suffer multiple handicaps. In this study each subject was evaluated for 10 items in regard to the abilities of social life by the author and two institutional staff members. The items of the scale were organized into several categories, such as human relationship, socialization, communication, occupation, self-help, self-control, and so on. Examination of the results obtained revealed that many retarded residents showed changes toward positive direction on each item after admission to this institution. Such desirable changes in the abilities of social life are due, perhaps, to the favorable effects of the comfortable physical as well as social environment around them and those of the special routine programs for the handicapped in this situation. The fact that this institution is exceptionally well run and well equipped might prevent any valid comparison with other institutions for the adult mentally handicapped. The results of the present study might cast some light upon the welfare policies for the mentally retardates in future. | |||||||
