| 内容記述 | In the previous papers the author dealt with the developmental process on the figure-cognition by mentally retarded children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of lanuage on spatial direction in this process. The subjects were 75 mentally retarded children with MA's between four years and eight years, 15 subjects in each MA subgroup. All chidren fell the category of simple retardation. The subjects were given 3 experimental tasks. Each subject was requested to select the same figure as the sample figure from among the choice stimuli which were composed of the same forms but differed in directions such as ↑・↓・←・→・ ? [Task 1], to verbalize the directionality of the sample figures in task 1 [Task 2], and to show the orientation in relaton to his body [Task3]. The results were as follows : 1) With increasing MA a significant increase in number of correct responses was found in both task 2 and task 3, as well as in task 1. 2) The mean cognition scores for the task 1 of the subjects who demonstrated superior performance in task 2 or task 3 were significantly higher than those of the subjects demonstrating inferior performance. 3) The percent of correct responses for the ↑ and ↓ directions was significantly higher than that for the ←・→ and ? directions. The superiority in up and down directions in task 2 and task 3 was also found in task 1. These findings suggest that mentally retarded children can utilize the verbal mediators rather effectively on the figure-cognition. | |||||||
