| 内容記述 | The postulation of 'Abstract Verbs' can be regarded as an important contribution to linguistic theory. It has interesting implications and consequences for 'universal grammar.' A full understanding of this approach requires some understanding of the history and the status of 'Abstract Verbs' in the fields of linguistic inquiry known as transformational linguistics. Once it is more fully understood, it promises to explain a number of significant facts which are now quite obscure. This study is an attempt to reconsider the syntactic and semantic behavior of English 'Abstract verbs' in clearer perspective. Its success is to be judged by the extent to which the present writer finds a reasonable explanation for the validity of 'Abstract Verbs' and encourages himself to explore the jungle of English linguistics. | |||||||
