The electrode reactions of several Copper(II) complexes in non aqueous solvents have been investigated by polarography and by the controlled potential electrolysis. The following three different electrode processes have been found with Copper(II) complexes of acetylacetone, o-phenanthroline and 2methy1-8hydroxy-quinoline. 1) Cu(AA)2 Cu(AA)2 in DMF shows a single irreversible polarographlc reduction wave at a dropping mercury electrode. From the coulometry at constant potential, it is found that two electrons are taking parts in the electrode reaction. The electrodeposition of metallic copper is found at a platinum electrode. From these, it is deduced that Cu(AA)2 is directly reduced to metallic state by irreversible two electron reduction process and 2 moles of acetylacetonate anions are liberated by the electrode reaction following the process : Cu(AA)2 + e ?? Cu(O) + 2AA- 2) Cu(Phen)32+ Cu(Phen)32+ shows two well defind reduction waves at a rotating platinum electrode in DMSO. The first wave is a reversible one electron reduction wave corresponding to the reaction of Cu2+ complex to Cu+ state and the second wave is corresponding to the electrode reduction of Cu+ complex to metallic copper. From the shift of the half wave potentials of each waves with the change of ligand concentrations, it is found that one mole of phenanthroline is liberated at the first step and two moles at the second step. The electrode reactions proceed as follows. Cu(Phen)32 + e ?? Cu(Phen)2+ + Phen Cu(Phen)2- + e ??Cu(O) + 2Phen 3) Cu(Ox)2 Cu(Ox)2 gives a reversible reduction wave at a dropping mercury electrode in DMF. The result of the controlled potential electrolysis at a mercury and a Pt electrode shows that the process is a one electron reduction and the reduction product can be oxidized reversibly to Cu(Ox)2. The electrodeposition of metallic copper does not occur. The half wave potential is constant at -0.647V vs. SCE independent with the ligand concentration, indicating that the ligand number does not change through the electrode reaction. The electrode reaction proceeds as follows. Cu(Ox)2 + e ??Cu(Ox)2- |
