内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In the field of aesthetics or music the Aristotle's theory which indicated the corresponding relation between music and emotion is well known. We attempted to examine his theory not aesthetically but psychologically, using the respiratory activity and galvanic skin response (GSR) as the physiological indicators of emotional responses. The subjects were ll female undergraduates. They were requested to listen to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring --- Sacrificical Dance, and continuos measures of respirationrates and GSR were taken. The data were processed as follows. 1. Respiration The respiration-rates during and after music were compared with pre-music rates. 2. GSR The changes in electrical conductance shown on the galvanomater were recorded every 5 sec, yielding a total 53 reading per subject for each piece. The grand means for all ll subjects were computed and they were plotted in a graph. (Fig.) 3. The corresponding relation between music and GSR This was illustrated with musical scores, figures, charts, etc., and "was analysed from the viewpoint of music and psychology. The major results obtained in this study may be briefly summerized as follows. 1. The onset of music is accompanied by general increases in respirationrate. 2. It can be seen that rates during music are significantly greater than those before it, with the single exception of first minute. 3. In this experiment it was found that the corresponding relation existed between GSR and the following musical factors. (a)Motif (b) Dynamic (c) Orchestration 4. Other findings are as follows. (a) GSR decreased with the lapse of time, independent of rhythm-factor and melodyfactor. (b) In Sequence the same tendencies were observed. In order to clarify the corresponding relation between music and emotion, it is further needed to verify the definite validity of GSR as the physiological indicator of emotional responses, and to analyse music as an acoustic organism more strictly. Finally, the developmental study with a larger sample are required, too.
