| 内容記述 | This study reviews the history of the early 19th century education for the idiots in France. Although the idiots had not been tortured at the stake for a considerable period of time, their conditions during the 18th century were still agonizing. Conditions in Paris at Bicetre and the Salpetriere were certainly no better. Pinel, as the physician in chief at Bicetre and the Salpêtriere, studies idiocy among other psychotic illness and referred to his work in the mental asylums as "Moral Treatment". Esquiroll followed so precisely the work of Pinel. He gave the first precise description of idiocy. Belhomme, in a pamphlet published in 1824, had advocated education of the idiots to ameliorate the unfortunate situation and expressed the opinion that idiots were educable in accordance with their degree of idiocy. In 1828, Ferrus formed a separate section for idiots and imbeciles at Bicêtre. Voisin enlarged the section in 1839. His efforts were continued for a time by the teacher, Vallee, along lines worked out by Seguin, who in 1837 had been invited to demonstrate his methods. At the Salpêtriere, a section for idiotic women was also started in 1831 by Falret. According to the letter to Howe, written by George Sumner, who lived in Paris, these schools mentioned above were so highly systematically organized. The practices in these schools were alike to those in the ordinary schools at that time. | |||||||
