Benzil, diacetyl, and acetylbenzoyl have been reduced stepwise at a dropping mercury electrode in aqueous solution and anhydrous dimethylformamide. Large-scale electrolytic reduction has been carried out on diacetyl and acetylbenzoyl in aqueous solution. Benzil gives two waves in DMF; the first wave has a wave height of one electron reduction and corresponds to the formation of benzil anion radical, and the second wave has a wave height of one electron and corresponds to the formation of endiol dianion, which is fast to rearrange to benzoin in a presence of phenol. This agreed with the data in aqueous solution. Diacetyl gives one electron reduction wave both in aqueous solutions and DMF, however, the second wave is observed only in aqueous solution of tetraethylammonium perchlorate. In the presence of phenol the wave in DMF grows to nearly twice the previous height. Acetylbenzoyl shows one electron reduction wave in buffer solution. In acidic solution at pH 3.1, however, it gives a new wave which is about 0.65V more negative than the first wave. In DMF, acetylbenzoyl shows two waves and the initial step is a reversible one and corresponds to the formation of anion radical. However, three waves can be observed on addition of phenol in DMF, the first and the second waves have a wave height of one electron reduction and the third one has a wave height of two electrons. Large-scale electrolytic reduction of acetylbenzoyl produced a mixture of acetylbenzoyl pinacol and phenylacetylcarbinol in aqueous solution. Phenylacetylcarbinol formed is reduced to phenylacetone in aqueous solution, that is, the secondary hydroxyl group was reduced to methylene group. These results for reduction of acetylbenzoyl are consistent with the view obtained by polarographic reduction in DMF. |
