| 内容記述 | In the Middle Ages, the public office abura-kura (oil warehouse) was the pivot of economic activities in the Todaiji Temple. The priests in the office (hijiri) were not higher, but minor ones whose mission was to enlighten the religious belief of common people in their society, whereas major priests took up only their own scholarly pursuit of profound religious doctorine. In their activities of enlightenment, the minor priests encouraged the people in the contribution of people's own lands to the temple and, in effect, realized satisfactory results. These lands were named daibutsu-toyu-rydden (the lands for the supply of lamp oil in the Daibutsu-den). Though the priests' activities had originally been confined to the management and provision of the oil, they went even to the extent of the repair and building of the temple as years passed. The purpose of this paper is to trace the historical development of abura-kura. | |||||||
