To explain how students understand matter with atomic or molecular concepts, inquiries by paper were applied in 1979 to about 2500 students at junior and senior high school levels and college levels. It was found that their understanding of simple matter with atomic concepts developed reasonably along the course of study of science in schools. However, it seems to be hard for the greater part of the students to apply the concepts to understand several fundamental properties of matter which they have not learned at atomic levels in schools. The quantitative grip of the nature of atoms appears also weak and even the fading of the understanding of atoms is found at college levels. |
