| 内容記述 | PURPOSE : The present paper is the first report of serial studies of adolescent angers. The purpose of this study is, first, to investigate the sex differences, if any, found in frequency, agent, and intensity of angers experienced and reported by teachers college students in a small city. Not a few studies with college women have been done in this aspect, but few have dealt with the sex difference. Secondly, our purpose is to throw some light upon the relationship between adolescent anger responses and their order of birth, and, thirdly, to show whether or not there are much more angers experienced on weekends than on weekdays. | |||||||

| 内容記述 | PROCEDURE : In the present investigation, the controlled diary method was employed with a group of 164 men and 153 women students in Teachers College, Nara Gakugei University, Nara, Japan. Most of them were in Freshmen Psychology classes. This group included 122 first-born and 50 "last-born". Our procedure combined many features from the earlier studies both in U.S.A. and in Japan. Records were given in with students' names on. Every day just before they went to bed, these students were requested to record all instances of anger experienced during that day, with a short description of the emotionarousing situation : the time, place, the instigating agent, responses, duration and intensity of anger (5-point rating scale with 5 at the most). The period of observation covered one week, from Saturday, June 5, through Friday, June 11, 1954. | |||||||

| 内容記述 | RESULTS:(1) Frequency of Anger. The average number (M.) of angers reported for each subject for the one-week period was 5.06 for men and 5.53 for women. The total number of angers in individual cases ranged from 0 to 26 for men and from 1 to 18 for women, indicating a wide range of individual differences. This data was compared with the corresponding results obtained on college women in the studies by Meltzer (Oregon State College) and, by Gates and Anastasia (Barnard College). Some possible reasons for the discrepancy were discussed. In this respect, we found no statistically significant sex difference. Besides, no significant relationship was found statistically between the order of birth and anger frequency (Table 1). (2) There were more angers experienced by these students on weekends than on weekdays. As far as this tendency is concerned, there was an interesting sex difference (Table 2)(Table 3). (3) Instigating Agent. The anger-arousing agent was persons in 73.3 per cent of the cases (69.7 per cent for men and 76.8 per cent for women), institutional factors in 8.2 per cent (9.6 per cent for men and 6.9 per cent for women), personal inadequacies in 4.1 per cent (3.3 per cent for men and 4.8 per cent for women), and objects and accidents in 14.4 per cent (17.4 per cent for men and 11.5 per cent for women). Remarkable sex differences were found in "persons", "objects and accidents" (significant at the 1 per cent level of confidence) and in "institutional factors" (significant at the 5 per cent level of confidence) (Table 4). Further analysis in the "persons" agent and comparison with the earlier studies were made with some discussion (Table 5). (4) Intensity. Little or no significant differences in relation to sex and the order of birth were revealed statistically in the intensity of angers (Table 6). Further results as to anger responses, its duration, etc. are to be reported soon. | |||||||
