内容記述 Education for sustainable development (ESD) is an extremely important educational measure for developing the human resources of today and tomorrow. Naturally, school music education as a form of art education needs to be promoted as ESD, and is more than capable of achieving sustainable development. At present, however, there are only a few cases where school music education is being practiced as ESD, and the very idea of "school music education as ESD" is beyond the awareness of researchers or teachers. The aims of this paper are twofold: (1) to recognize "competencies and attitudes required for ESD" as the goals accomplished through instruction in the area of junior high school music appreciation and clearly specify those goals as well as the stages to reach them, and (2) to suggest example themes that learners will be encouraged to think about, by taking note of "cogitation" as a means for students to acquire the specified "competencies and attitudes required for ESD". Some of the "competencies and attitudes required for ESD" derived from the study include a "competency in perceiving abstractions such as music and artworks through both objective perception and sensitivity," "competency in communicating one' s own imaginings and emotions to others and in responding to those of others for mutually harmonious communication," and "competency in making apt criticisms for the creation and sustainable development of a diverse range of cultures, including art." In addition, themes that learners are encouraged to think about were conceived, such as "Let' s determine the elements of music that can empower those in distress by recalling our own experiences while listening and then discussing our thoughts with other students."
