The Forest is situated in the southwestern part of Nara Prefecture, just at the center of the Kii Peninsula. It rises to an altitude of 1200 m. s. m. and covers about 500 ha of mountain slopes along the Akadani River. This is the first paper of the series dealing with hepatic flora. From, the Forest are reported 123 species of Hepaticae, most of which are of the tropical or subtropical element. It is characteristic for the hepatic flora that plants of Porellaceae and Lejeuneaceae grow abundantly, while those of Scapaniaceae and Calypogeiaceae occur rather rarely.
